The ASA exists to achieve the highest standards of service for both customers and publishers, and to improve relationships and terms with publishers. The ASA aims to foster the use of a 'best practice' approach to customer and publisher service and to represent members' common interests to publishers, customers, representative and governmental organisations and associations worldwide.
The ASA was founded in 1934 and during its formative years membership was restricted to the UK. However, as the list of members shows, the ASA is now a fully international body with members enjoying the varied benefits on offer. Membership is open to all companies whose main occupation or a substantial part of it is that of a subscription agent and who have an annual turnover of approximately £1,000,000. Membership of the ASA is corporate and includes all wholly owned subsidiaries of the member company. Associate membership status is available to any other organisation interested in the work of the ASA and the subscription industry and especially electronic intermediaries, publishers and library associations.
The ASA also runs conferences for publishers and librarians to ensure that issues affecting the industry are fully discussed and that ASA members, librarians and publishers have opportunities to mix and share their views on the journal industry.
