The Money Trail: Cost and Value in Journal Information Provision

23-24 February 2004

An ASA Conference

Royal College of Nursing, Cavendish Square, London

How are the processes of research and the dissemination of the results of that research funded? Given the budget difficulties faced by libraries in acquiring all the information that they need, this is fast becoming a major issue for all those engaged in the acquisition, distribution and publication of research and scholarly information. This conference examines how the money flows. It looks at all the major issues involved from how research and libraries, both academic and corporate, are funded, how the money is spent, how publishers price their journals, the costs of alternative publishing models such as Open Access, the reasons behind the trend for publishers to grow by merger and acquisition, and how the efficiency of the purchasing system might be improved. Senior figures from the library, publishing and intermediary communities from the USA and Europe will share their knowledge and expertise to provide a major opportunity to discuss and debate these crucial issues.
